The Ice Yachts shipyard presents on the market a new product, the Ice 60 Gran Comfort, cruising and even more easy to sail version of the already fast ICE 60, which winks to owners looking for an important boat, suitable for fast cruising and especially comfortable.
The Ice 60 Gran Comfort, developed directly by Umberto Felci's studio together with the shipyard's technical staff, promises to be a true fast cruiser of the highest quality with incredible use of space, beautiful lines and innovative interiors that put guests at the forefront.

Derived from the powerful lines of the standard Ice 60, with a mix of contents taken from the 62′ and 70′ of the Lombard shipyard, it manages to exalt the characteristics of robustness, seaworthiness and performance that distinguish the brand and have led to its success.
In terms of hydrodynamics, the water lines and appendages, this time with a draft of 2.90 meters, have been designed for high performance, with very respectable results that highlight the Ice 60's ability to climb into the wind at very tight angles and to plane quickly at load speeds: with the engine, it can cruise at over 10 knots.

To guarantee this performance are added the high technologies used in the construction and the quality of a high quality craftsmanship carried out by technicians who make use of the experience acquired in many years of activity dedicated to the construction of boats that have written the history of sailing.
The hull and deck are infusion-laminated from a female mold with carbon fiber; the structures, also in carbon, are laminated in situ and also made in infusion, becoming one with the hull and deck, which eliminates creaking and noise. The deck, in addition to the classic gluing process, is bonded to the hull, as are all the bulkheads, creating a monolithic and extremely rigid structure.

These choices, in addition to containing the weights, give the boat a solidity and robustness capable of withstanding the repeated stresses and heavy loads it faces even in the most demanding navigation.
The Ice 60 Gran Comfort is equipped with a double Weldox steel fin with high mechanical characteristics and a numerically controlled milled lead torpedo that offer the advantage of reducing the weight of the ballast in percentage terms and, therefore, the total displacement of the boat with the same righting moment.
The first example of the Ice 60 Gran Comfort is currently under construction at the Ice Yachts shipyard in Salvirola, near Crema, and the first boat, for a discerning owner, will be in the water in May.

It all started in 1992 when, on the return from his first ARC (Atlantic Rally for cruisers) Stefano Buono began to pull strings to make his dream come. He even found a sponsor
a sponsor, in 1993, to participate in the second edition of the Round the World Rally organized by Jimmy Cornell, but then the opportunity arose for him to work on a high-impact project, linked to a Nobel Prize, which led him to postpone his plans.
This intrepid family has been sailing for ten months now aboard their new floating home. In the summer, they sailed through the Balearic and Canary archipelago to Cape Verde, from where, in November, they set off across the Atlantic and then sailed through the Caribbean until, in March, they crossed the Panama Canal on their way to the Pacific. When Stefano was asked if the reality was living up to the expectations he had surely been that creating over the years, his answer was immediate and forceful: "Everything's going great, but the most important truth is that I didn't expect anything else, as I have been sailing intensively for more than 20 years. I have already owned two boats, completed four Atlantic crossings and have spent many holidays sailing around the world, so there couldn't be any big surprises."

Again a huge step in development of SILENT YACHTS brand and solar-electric yachting in general.
Silent Yachts reveals it's plan to build catamaran in collaboration with Volkswagen, powered by VW electric drive matrix (MEB). The catamaran lines will be designed by VW subsidiary SEAT's Cupra brand. We´ve seen BMW and Torqeedo collaboration before, now VW, who is next?

At the recently held Boot Düsseldorf, the Austrian company producing solar catamarans, Silent Yachts, signed an agreement with a shipyard in Ancona, Italy, to produce in their facilities model Silent 60 for the European market. So from now on, the 60 and 80 feet models will be built in Italy.
Silent Yachts currently has 12 high-end electric catamarans in production ranging from 55 to 80 feet with a starting price of 1.5 million euros.
These premium-class electric catamarans provide a unique experience in the sea, being now possible to live it, by testing them at the International Multihull Hull Show to be held in La Grande Motte from April 15 to 19, by sending a prior request. The model that will be present there is the Silent 55.

In early March, Ice Yachts launched the second unit of the Ice Cat 67 catamaran, the biggest sailing multihull ever built in Italy. Designed to circumnavigate the globe, the Ice Cat 67 has the RINA certificate and the most advanced safety equipment, the same used onboard the racing trimarans that participate in the Jules Verne Trophy.

I hear a lot that electric boating is our future, but not practical yet. To check it out I compared a revolutionary Silent 80 catamaran of a new, "silent" class of yachts with a most popular power catamaran of the similar size in the market Lagoon Seventy 8.
Buying price with "ready to sail" options is around
4.200.000 EUR ex VAT for Lagoon Seventy 8
4.600.000 EUR ex VAT for Silent 80
Yearly maintenance. Normal usage for the most owners of motor yachts is about 100 hours a year.
⁃ Lagoon as a standard has two 510hp engines. Consumption of these engines is 100l/hour each one, or 20.000l for both engines, 100hours. What is about 35.000 EUR.
⁃ Silent will spend about 2000 kWt of a free solar energy. About 13 days of SunPower solar panels work.
⁃ Lagoon engine maintenance is about 1500 EUR for each one, 3000 EUR in total
⁃ Silent 80 motors will need first small maintenance after 50.000 hour
⁃ Water expanses depends a lot on the region. But not for Silent 80, it will produce his water itself using a free sun energy.
Summing this, Lagoon will spend about 40.000 EUR more then Silent 80 yearly and in ten years all the difference in selling price will disappear.
Don't forget the difference in the construction quality. Silent 80 is 15% lighter, it's vacuum infused carbon reinforced fiberglass, so stiff and light again. All Hull is thermal insulated to avoid waisting energy on cooling or heating. There are important development costs and again, this is new class of boats.
We should of course calculate also a lifecycle of solar panels and batteries. Warranty for solar panels is 25 years, during this time they will not loose more then 7% of efficiency. For batteries warranty is 8 years. During this period they still shall have their 92 % of capacity. Lagoon engines by this time will need an expansive refit, with taking engines off the catamaran and so on.
Silent catamarans are in production from 2009, they are passed already 100.000nm altogether, crossed an Ocean and is proved by time and nautical miles.
And now this is a good question , are "silent" boats a future? Or this future has already happened?

When you google "Disadvantages of Electric Vehicle" one of the firsts will be The Distance Range. But the great advantage of electric catamarans over cars is a huge area available for solar panels. So I decided to find out, what is the real autonomy of Silent Yachts. I know of course that before starting a production Michael Köhler sailed 15.000nm on a test version in 3 years with just 50 hours of generator usage, but how does it fit with numbers?
I started with my favorite spot, Baleares Island, Mallorca, Ibiza, Menorca, and lovely Formentera.
Incident Radiation Flux (the average amount of solar energy per square meter per day) for this region is 5kWh/m2 (http://www.adrase.com/en/).
Sun Power panels (all Silent Yachts are equipped with #SunPower 370 #monocrystalline panels with 25 years warranty) efficiency is 22,7%, which gives us 1135Wh/m2 a day, or:
- 53kWh a day (annual average) for Silent 55 + up to 210kWh battery pack
- 75kWh for Silent 60 + up to 210kWh battery pack or
- 115-130kWh for Silent 80 + up to 530kWh battery pack.
Which in its turn gives us about 24 hours of sailing at 6 knots speed, or, if you make usual for cruises 4-6 hours under engine a day, you don't use your battery pack AT ALL. This means UNLIMITED RANGE, which is really impressive!
And looking at a graph from "THE EUROPEAN SOLAR RADIATION ATLAS" we can count on 60-80% more energy than average annual for the summer holidays.
Making this calculations I can say, YES, anyone can do it again with Silent Yachts

All SILENT YACHTS are powered by two Torqeedo electric 30-250kW engines which are powered by battery bank which, in its turn, can be charged by solar panels. So it's worse to talk about batteries.
Going ahead, SILENT YACHTS catamarans are equipped with 120-240 kWh (28-56 module) MG Li-Ion HE battery bank with lithium rich NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt) cathodes, but let´s see why.
There are several types of batteries in the market today: Lead Acid (including GEL, AGM), Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni MH) and Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion).
The first two types have very low Specific Energy (kWh/kg), 2-3 times less then Li-Ion, in other words, battery bank will be too heavy to give you some reasonable sailing autonomy, although AGM batteries are very popular in conventional sailing and powerboats where electricity consumption is relatively small.
Nickel Metal Hydride batteries were really used in a famous GM EV1 electric car in 1996, and it gave a car significant autonomy of 280km. These batteries had a lot of advantages, they were more stable, a battery management system is simple, they also had a very high specific power (W/kg) what should give acceleration and engine pull-down, but battery bank was still heavy and today Li-Ion batteries are used in a large majority of electric vehicles.
So Li-Ion batteries were chosen to have a light battery bank with a lot of energy, specifically, SILENT 55 has a 120kWh battery bank which weighs just 800kg.
There are also several types of Li-ion batteries, depending mostly on a cathode material and electrolyte (Li-Polymer). Li-Ion NMC batteries together with NCA (Nicol Cobalt Aluminium) have the best Specific Energy, but NMC even more stable and thus safe. This is why SILENT YACHTS power its catamarans with Li-Ion NMC bank.

We are in the Ice Yachts shipyard again and this visit promises to be especially dense and interesting. The idea is to know better a boat line from the strategy point of view, but also to know better a manufacturing process.
The first day we made a walk around shipyards, Ice Yachts has two of them. In one Ice Yachts produces now a HULL №1 of ICE 70 and ICECAT 67 catamaran. In another, ICE 52rs, ICE 54, ICE 60 and the deck for 70ft. As I already know quite well Ice Yachts monohulls, I was more curious about ICECAT 67. The boat is in the last phase and should hit the water already in January.
From the first look, you understand that this beast is unstoppable. It is really big, the biggest sailing cat built in Italy, and it looks very fast. The weight of the hull is just 8.5 Tonnes! (real weight, checked after lamination) But, as this boat is going around the world, it has a lot of equipment, including two 600l/h water makers, diving compressor, 3kw windlass, two Watt and Sea hydro generators, ten solar panels and a good pack of Li-Ion batteries. Although catamaran is smaller than 24m, it is certificated by RINO class society, what the client wish. And with all these upgrades it still will be below 23 Tonns, full equipped.

Winners again!

The 15^th Palermo-Montecarlo was a particularly challenging edition due to the conditions and exceptional heat that kept tacticians on their toes from start to finish.
Primavista Lauria, the Circolo Canottieri Roggero di Lauria boat, was overall winner in corrected time, despite finishing 7^th in real time. It is the fifth time the ICE 52 has won this contest, a world class team that included Sandro Montefusco, Matteo Ivaldi, Andrea Caracci, Sicilian Giuseppe Leonardi and Mario Noto pulling off a tactically perfect race.
