In 2017 Silent-Yachts presented a prototype of an electric and solar catamaran. A model that attracted attention for its commitment to electric propulsion and power supply by solar panels. Now they have launched a renewed update, which has significantly improved its features, allowing it to be self-sufficient thanks to its new photovoltaic installation.
It is a luxurious model of 16.7 meters in length, can be powered by three engine configurations. One consists of two small motors of 30 kW each, which allow it to move at a quiet speed, with lower cost and lower consumption. The second option is one formed by two powerful engines of 250 kW each, which allow the catamaran to reach a higher top speed. The last option allows the addition of both systems, for an even higher dynamic performance. A system that allows it to move at a cruising speed of between 6 and 8 knots for the basic configuration (11 and 14 km/h) up to a top speed of up to 20 knots for the most capable (37 km/h).
The battery is a 120 kWh pack, which can be charged through an outlet of up to 100 kW, and is powered by a photovoltaic system with 30 panels, which offer a power of 10 kWp, and have a modern MPPT regulator, which allows you to get more out of the solar system.
Among the options offered by the brand we also have present a kite, which allows to harness the power of the wind to increase autonomy, as well as the traditional sail, which as for a few centuries, also allows to move without emissions. A set that can be complemented with a 1.5 kW wind turbine. In case all this is not enough, the occupants can pull a gasoline generator capable of offering a power of 22 kW to charge the batteries.
With all this, the Silent 55 is shown as a sustainable and emission-free alternative, to which we can add factors such as its almost zero operating cost since it will hardly have to use energy from the electricity grid, and has little maintenance. This model also comes with an 8-year warranty on the battery and a 25-year warranty on the solar installation.
